Photographer's Note

This is my second posting from New Zealand's only active marine volcano - White Island.

It is a 1.5 hour boat ride from Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty to this barren moonscape island with it's rich iron oxide reds and sulphur whites and yellows. Hard hats and gas masks are a necessity as you walk passed steaming cracks in the ground, bubbling pools and get whiffs of the pungent acidic gas.
