Photographer's Note

This is the area of Rotorua known as Ohinemutu. It was the original Maori settlement in the area, although now it is just a suburban area on the edge of Lake Rotorua. The lake fills the caldera of a dormant volcano - the geysers and steaming pools of Rotorua remind us that this city is in the crater of a volcano that could erupt again.

This sunset view shows some of the steaming pools and fumaroles that lie around this neighborhood, some of them in front yards and backyards of houses, some just next to the street. The photo was taken after rain, so the steam was more obvious as the air was humid and the ground full of water.

I used Photoshop to lighten up the foreground while keeping the colour in the sky. Even so, some of the sky was burnt out: the photo was a partly successful experiment.
