Photographer's Note

This little girl is struggling to carry a load of pandanus fruit that she and her older brother have collected in the jungle near their home. I spotted them walking along the side of a dirt road on Buota islet, Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, Kiribati. Anyone who has collected pandanus fruit will know how heavy they are. Her brother was walking a few metres in front of her empty-handed, so I suppose that indicates that in the Gilbertese culture it is women that who do all the hard work even at an early age.

I had a choice of using this close-up or a wide shot of the little girl trailing the brother. The latter would have told the story about the women doing all the work, but I chose this close-up as her frowned expression says as much as the wide shot. PP: cropped, contrast +8, saturation +13, unsharp mask.
