Photographer's Note

Levuka in 1875 was the capital of Fiji but was still quite small. By 1997 it had shrunk quite a lot and had become a sleepy backwater. It's never been big on tourism because it doesn't have any classic Fijian beaches but quite a few do come for the history. It is also visited by its share of yachts.
For the last of this little series (for now anyway) the top photo this time is of the main street in 1997. The bottom is from a panorama taken by my great grand father. It shows the main street in 1875. You can see the old joins for the panorama.
The building materials hadn't changed in the 122 years between photos.

Hello dear Ian and have a nice weekend
I like the photos in black and white...
they are almost artistic and it is
difficult to capture somethig
in sepia....but you did it so
many years ago
thanks for your useful notes
in order to understand better
what both present...
regards
Costantino

Hello Ian,
Again it's hard to make an actual comparison, but that doesn't make the photos less interesting. Cars, modern signs and less noise is mainly what proves the upper view to be the 1997 picture.

Gert

Hello Ian,
The photographs are very different but still enormously interesting.
You must have wondered, when you walked on the streets of the capital, if your grandfather placed his feet in the same spots!
It's just amazing that panorama has been stitched!
I wonder when the first petrol station arrived on Fiji! The cars, in evidence in your photograph, needed fuel. I just cannot imagine a tanker unloading here, yet it must have happened!
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Ian,
The point of view is showing the details of the houses style in 1875 and 1997. You have captured wll a daily life scene. Well done, have a nice day.

Hello Ian,
Once again the higher quality image in 1997, the cars and the modern signage illustrate the top photo is much more recent. Plus the waves in the lower shot are motion blurred. Many early exposures took 8 minutes. I can't imagine sitting still that long for a passport photo or portrait these days! They were propped up with supports out of sight to support them and minimise movement. Tfs!

Hi Ian,still a nice comparison between the centuries thanks to the photos of your grandfather, we recognize some houses still there after so many years, especially those with the front porch, great work, really interesting this time too. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano
