Roofs of Sydney’s Opera House, photo taken from Circular Quay.

Sydney’s Opera House is situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney harbour opposite of Harbour Bridge and close to Royal Botanical Gardens and the Rocks.

The Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon and was officially opened on 20 October 1973.

The construction began in March 1959. The Opera House was built in three stages: stage I (1959–1963) consisted of building the upper podium; stage II (1963–1967) the construction of the outer shells; stage III (1967–1973) interior design and construction.

The original cost and scheduling estimates in 1957 projected a cost of 7 million AUD and completion date of 26 January 1963 on Australia Day. In actuality, the project was completed ten years late and more than fourteen times over budget, having final cost of 102 million AUD.

But it became one of the most beautiful modern buildings in the world.
