Photographer's Note

It's autumn in Australia. This photo was taken in the Rhododendron Gardens in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne. There are no rhododendrons in this view (although some varieties were in flower), but a Japanese maple made a good subject for a photo. Tree ferns are common in the gardens; they grow naturally in the area. The weather was cloudy and dull, but this makes the maple stand out strongly.

I manipulated this photo in Photoshop. I enlarged it to a really big size, then applied the poster edges filter which enhances edges, then I reduced the photo back to this size. It gives a slightly unreal effect, but brings out more detail in the foliage than was in the untreated photo.
