Photographer's Note

I have had my previous closeup of a begonia deleted, so I shall try again with a more substantial note.My intention was to complement my previous shot and show you why so many people were taking photos of these perfect flowers.

Ballaratís Famous Begonia Festival

Ballaratís conservatory has 240 varieties of begonias, 46 have mixed colours, with the most common colour being pink, followed by orange. Pure white is the least common.
Only three varieties are perfumed.
Every year a colourful spectacle is designed by the head gardener of the City of Ballarat and the flowers are selected and installed by the nursery team before the conservatory doors are opened for the public in early March.
In workshop you can see the conservatory whose design by Peter Elliot was inspired by the Japanese paper folding technique of Origami.
The building has a computer controlled heating and cooling system, but all plants are hand watered to suit the varying water requirements of each.

I shall also put in workshop an example of a cascading begonia. The one featured is of the large upright variety.

The photo is dedicated to Cagla Hanim who has told me that begonias are one of her favourite flowers.
