Photographer's Note
It could just as easily be called 'United Nations' as 'Generations', as this one is a good example of our immigrant nation. Long after taking it, in January this year while strolling on the south bank of Melbourne's Yarra River with Santo, Klaudio, Steve and Alfred, I have noticed that perhaps there is some meaning suggested in the way the perspective view - through a very long lens - narrows down to a blurred image of the domed Flinders Street Railway Station about a kilometre away. The famous station is perhaps the most well known landmark building in Melbourne, and truly represents the very anglo-saxon Melbourne of those decades before the great influx of immigrants began seriously in the 1950s.

Hello Andrew,
This is a fine composition showing different generations of architecture as well as generations of Melbourne inhabitants. The diagonal grey bars give the pedestrians interestingly lopsided surroundings and enhance the colours of their clothes.
Kind regards,

Hello Andrew,
It struck me what a very multi-cultural country G.B. is now. The month of Olympic and Paralympic Games has done much to signify this.
The figures in your shot are very interesting because of their dress, their attitudes and their activities. I just love how you have taken this shot without any of them being aware of you or your camera. I find this type of shot extremely difficult to achieve - always worried that someone may be offended.
The composition is excellent, very nicely offset and with the converging lines drawing the viewers towards the focal images. There is a fine sense of perspective in this sharply exposed shot.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hi Andrew. A graphically structured Photo. Young and old are the go here. The older people more traditionally, the young people dressed modern. And of course a photographer in action. Well done. Rgds wolfgang.

Hello Andrew,
An interestingnote you have written about the immigrant population in Australia and this is a fine photograph with which to illustrate it.
Your photograph also is a classic demonstration of how a long telephoto lens "foreshortens" perspective, something which we can see on television every weekend if we watch Grand Prix motor racing - racing cars doing around 200 m.p.h. seen full-on by the television cameras with their long lenses appear to be hardly moving at all! Here the older couple are seen in exquisite detail and sharpness, the younger couple, perhaps 20 or 30 feet behind them less sharp and the distant building much less so.
From the aesthetic point of view I like this one too - the two couples are well portrayed against a plain grey background but the oblique supports on the left and their subsequent shadows add interest as well as adding to the whole perspective effect.
Lovely colours, perfect exposure and exquisite sharpness.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Andrew,
A really brillant and very unusal shot. The inclined steel flats along walkway and their shadows are pehaps not the most perfect environment for of photo of people. However, with excellent timing you made perfect use of it. The two couples are perfectly positioned and really match the environment with all its lines. I also note that you used a tele lens and I am surprised that you managed to get both couples at different distances sharp although other parts of the photo are blurred. Really impressive. TFS and have a nice day!
Cheers,
Ulf

Hi Andrew,
I never looked at Flinders Station that way but I find this way to present it is probaly the best you can do. Cool compo - so graphical and so human.

Hi Andrew,
Interesting example of multi-cultural Australia. I think it is more evident in Melbourne than any other city (even Sydney). It is good to see these cultures living together in this great city, and we benefit from the diverse food, festivals and perspectives that they bring. The iconic glimpse of the station in the background gives away the location. I like the horizontal bars and the play of light they provide.

Hello Andrew,
I like this one as it has a strong graphical feel. The slanted grey railings and their shadow offer a certain dynamic quality. The red of the sari is a good contrast to the grey.Excellent light and sharpness.

Hello Andrew!
this scene impresses me, first of all, with these diagonal lines all around the people and the bright - almost luminescent - red and green colours... it seems as if this is a scene from a fantastic movie (at least, I have this impression!).
but of course, the distant blurred - quite earthly - building (which you mentioned the Note) proves that this is reality :)
Very interesting composition... I got one little idea: I might suggest cropping a bit of the left side...
warmest greetings from rainy Moscow,
Elena

Hello Andrew,
A truly great capture. Not only you have couples representing different generations and cultural backgrounds, we can also hazard a guess about their lifestyles. Fantastic perspective, play with lines as well as light and shadow. Flinders St station in the background is just an icing on a cake!
Best regards,
Izabela
