Evening along the River Derwent, a photo from Tasmania, East

Photographer's Note

The banks of the Derwent were once covered by forests and occupied by Aborigines. European settlers farmed the area and during the 20th century many dams were built on its tributaries.

The river originates at Lake St Clair and flows south over a distance of 187 km to New Norfolk and the estuary portion extends a further 52 km out to sea. Flows average in range from 50 to 140 cubic metres per second. Mean annual flow is 90 cubic metres per second.

The large estuary forms the Port of the City of Hobart – often claimed to be the deepest sheltered harbour in the Southern Hemisphere; some past guests of the port include the HMS Beagle, carrying Charles Darwin, in February 1836, the USS Enterprise and USS Missouri. The largest vessel to ever travel the Derwent is the 113,000 tonne, 61 metre high, ocean liner 'Diamond Princess', which made its first visit in January 2006. At points in its lower reaches the river is nearly three kilometres wide, and as such is the widest river in Tasmania. Until the construction of several hydro-electric dams between 1934 and 1968, it was prone to frequent flooding.

This is a really well composed shot, where the rocks anchor the f/g, the jetty, with its reflections, creates an attractive guide across the water and the hazy b/g creates a fine sense of depth.
For those of us who have never been here, you provide a fine impression of the extent of the city.

Very good composition to include the pier and the rocky shore in the FG. I love the colorful boats cruising on the calm waters. Good light and sharpness. Very well presented with a detail note.

Hello Leslie,
You found an excellent viewpoint, giving a wonderful view of this harbour, set in a very scenic and mountanous region. The light, the interesting FG with the wooden peer and the little sail boats are all very successful in making this a beautiful image. The distant hills and partly cloudy sky finish this lovely photo nicely.

a very interesting note, well done with that.
And I know its only a simple thing, but I like how we can see the tree branch on the top right area.

love seeing the linear line of boats in the water, makes the scene that much more charming.

A good shot with soft light! You framed the pier and the line of little boats very well and the green stones make a very nice foreground. It's a beautiful place, hard to imagine how it was before the dam was built!
