Photographer's Note

This echidna was busy eating ants under the gravel of this relatively busy footpath round Dove Lake. Echidnas are quite shy and this one hid its face under the gravel. So I stopped and waited for it to lift its head before I took the picture.
Echidnas, like platypusses, are monotremes - the only known animals to lay eggs and to suckle their young.
