This is a Pied Oystercathcer, photographed on a beach near Bicheno. They feed on shell fish which live in the mud/sand. They are pretty shy making it hard to get close enough to get a good shot, but this one was obliging.

Hi Stephen,
These colourful characters are certainly a favorite of mine, I see them often along the coastline, and they appear to be in healthy numbers up here. I like the natural, sandy surrounds and moisture in this image, the subject is sharp, animated and well saturated. A great photo, one of the best of this species that I have seen - they are not the most simple thing to photograph!
