Photographer's Note

Today has been an unbelievable day in Brisbane - a day many residents believed we would never see. Since 1974 (when the last major flood occurred here) the Wivenhoe Dam has been built. So many residents believed the Wivenhoe Dam would save Brisbane from another major flood - but today we were proved wrong.

I know today's flood has been a news item throughout the world - and I also notice that Matthew Watt and Justin Button have posted photos and given detailed background information of today's devastation.

I decided to post a photo showing the tremendous community spirit in this city. When the City Council put out a call for sandbag volunteers the response was overwhelming. Shortly afterwards they released a statement saying that no more volunteers were needed until further notice. In my photo a chain of sandbag volunteers can be seen in the suburb of Rosalie.
