Photographer's Note

The dictionary definition of baldacchino is "a canopy of fabric or stone over an altar, shrine, or throne in a Christian church or carried in Christian religious processions over an object of veneration." Here is what the museum says about this piece:

"Originally commissioned by 'La Colonia di Montelepre' (the immigrant population in Grand Rapids from the town of Montelepre, Sicily, Italy) and donated to the congregation of Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, the shrine was used for annual parade processions and festival days in the neighborhood known as Little Italy from 1922 until the early 1970s. It is reported that each year one ill child was allowed to ride on the shrine during the parade."

The banner next to it is that of the Polish Heritage Society. Because of the banner, this photo is dedicated to Krzysztof Dera (Fis2), Mariusz Kamionka (mkamionka) and Malgo (Malgorzata Kopczynska, emka).
