Photographer's Note

I don't have many lighthouse shots that I'm happy with. I guess I just haven't seen a whole lot of lighthouses in my travels, and when I have, the lighting hasn't been right, or the view of the lighthouse is too close, allowing only for super-wide-angle shots. I visited the Yaquina Head Light when driving up the coast of Oregon, in search of a town to live. Newport was one of the towns I considered. Despite Newport being a very nice town, it didn't make the cut and I eventually decided to live in Astoria. I'm glad I did stop in Newport for a couple of days and I'm glad I got to see the Yaquina Head Light, because it is a beautiful lighthouse in a beautiful setting. I always liked the lighting in this shot, because the sunrise light is golden and is lighting the lighthouse nicely, but the sky and the ocean seem to blend together, which I think gives the background an expansive feel. Also, if the sky and water were more contrasted, the image would be feel bisected, in my opinion. This is a beautiful spot, so visit it if you're ever passing through Oregon. In addition to the lighthouse, you'll also find an amazing cobble beach and spectacular tide pools.
