Photographer's Note

New Hampshire in an interesting state to visit, with large wilderness areas and picturesque towns. The continental ice sheet once covered the entire state, eroding upland areas, gouging mountains, and re-directing waterways into precipitous streams and beautiful lakes. The White Mounains of the Appalachian chain form ranges across the north central part that are broken here and there by passes known locally as notches. Pictured is the Ellis River, which drops from here some 80 ft. (24m) through Pinkham Notch.

The state's motto, displayed prominently on vehicle license plates, is "Live Free or Die."
