Photographer's Note

New Yorkers love the New York City landmarks as much as any tourist. However, as a New Yorker, I'm always looking for something beyond the obvious. This photo is not a prize winner, I know. It's only intended to show something New York, photographically different, from a New Yorker's view.

For a few years now, someone or "something" has been putting up this image of the man from Grenoble, France, Andre The Giant around the New York City area and beyond. I have seen this image all over the city, in the oddest of places. Andre was the world famous, and legendary pro wrestler who passed away in 1993.

It was revealed in the recent years that this was the work of an underground NY artist (I don't recall the name). He even has a site devoted to this. The site describes its campaign as "an experiment in Phenomenology." Something akin to subliminal messages in the media, and how we "obey" all that we are told.

Funny thing is that this once underground artist is now quite famous, and "cool" with the hip crowd. For example, the actor Ashton Kutcher has been spotted wearing "Giant" t-shirts. Just goes to show that, as history has shown, what was once underground, and cultish, often becomes popular, and cool.

So don't forget: Giant BAD!...Giant ROCKS!...Giant COOL!
And most of all: OBEY GIANT!!! :-)
