Photographer's Note

This is the second in my series of photos taken from Point Sublime at sunset. Please open in a new tab for the best view.

As the sun drops closer to the horizon, the Grand Canyon's vivd colors bleed into the sky while shadows consume its depths.

I was conflicted. My main reason for obtaining one of the limited number of backcountry camping permits for Point Sublime was to take photos of the stars with the canyon lit by a nearly full moon. Clouds would hinder or totally prevent that. On the other hand, I was anticipating the colors that would play across these clouds in the near future. I really needed a magic wand, one that would hold the clouds in place until full darkness arrived and, then, make them instantly vanish.

ISO 200, f/9 at 1/125 second, 16mm focal length
