Photographer's Note

For many years, this site was a barren parking lot, but a lovely monument was unveiled on Sept. 30, 2015, the 60th anniversary of James Dean's death. This marks the site where the house, known as The Seven Gables Apartment House, he was born in once stood. Many have the misconception that he was actually born in tiny Fairmount, located about ten miles to the south, but he was actually born in Marion, where his mother, who died when he was eight, is also buried. The house has long since been demolished, but people so frequently made the pilgrimage from nearby Fairmount that this was erected on the site, and it's lovely! There's also a bronze star in the sidewalk, unveiled by actor Martin Sheen, which formerly marked the site of Dean's birthplace. The house was torn down in the 70s or 80s, I believe.
