Photographer's Note

O to be out in nature on a glorious April day! This is one of the most notable formations at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, just 17 miles outside Las Vegas, NV, off State Route 159. Not a lot of gas stations out that way, so make sure you're fueled up before you go! There's a 13-mile one-way scenic drive through the park, but also miles of hiking trails and areas for rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking and nature observing. This site was Nevada's first National Conservation area, created in 1990, the seventh to be designated as such. Two million visitors pass through annually. There's a campground also, but it's not open year-round. This area can get unfathomably hot during summer months, so plan accordingly if you're planning to visit then. June through August are the hottest months, with temperatures averaging in the upper 90s, but it's common for daytime temperatures to reach triple digits.

The sandstone hills are part of the Keystone Thrust, which reach 3,000 feet high in some areas. The highest point is La Madre Mountain, at 8,154 feet, so the landscape varies dramatically. The curious color of the sandstone is something of a mystery to many visitors. The area lay under a shallow ocean basin during the Paleozoic era (600 mya), when as much as 9,000 feet of sediment was deposited and eventually uplifted during the Mesozoic Era (250 mya) to form the landscape seen today. The curious bands of color resulted from oxidization of the iron present in some of the stone, but it's curious how it seemingly occurred in the "bands" like those seen in the photo. Around 66 mya, the Keystone Thrust Fault developed and the subsequent movement forced the older sedimentary rock over the younger, red-colored stone. The area is also known for petroglyphs, as many tribes occupied the area over the centuries, attracted by the presence of water and game. The oldest groups were the Paleo Indians, which arrived in North America around 11,000 years ago.
