Gephyrophobiacs

Chesapeake Bay Bridge

In 1938, the Maryland General Assembly decided to build a bridge at the Sandy Point – Kent Island location. The plan could only be implemented after World War II and the bridge was opened in 1952.
The bridge has a shore to shore length of 7 km and was then the world's longest continuous over-water steel structure.
The parallel span was realized in 1973. In the same design but with 3 instead of two lanes.
The bridge's western terminus is in Sandy Point State Park, located northeast of Annapolis in Anne Arundel County, and its eastern terminus is in Stevensville on Kent Island in Queen Anne's County.
The three photos will introduce you to the bridge.

■ Picture 1: ◄ Suspansion-Cantilever Bridge ►

Different types of bridge constructions were used for the design of the bridge. The middle section is a 975 m suspension span with a maximum clearance of 56.7 m, high enough to accommodate ocean-going vessels and tall ships. The roaddeck is formed by a deck truss and steel girder.
On this photo you can see the vertical suspender of the suspension bridge through the truss construction of the roaddeck.

■ Picture 2: ◄ Gephyrophobiacs ►

This photo gives a good overview of the different parts of the two spans. Because of its height, the narrowness of the spans, the low guardrails, and the frequency of high winds, it is known as one of the scariest bridges in the world, especially in higher tractor-trailer trucks. Several incidents related to the bridge have occurred. In some cases, these have caused significant closures and traffic congestion on either side approaching the bridge.
The Maryland Transportation Authority contracts with private companies to provide transportation across the bridge for gephyrophobiacs (nervous drivers). and cyclists; fees are $ 25 and $ 30 for drivers and cyclists, respectively.
The bridge has been closed four times due to extreme weather.

The danger has passed and we reach safely without geophyrophobiacs-coach Kent Island in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland 😊
