Façades

High time to pay attention to the rich architecture of Pittsburgh.
Chicago may have the name of the Architecture City of the USA, Pittsburgh is a good alternative.

I concentrate today on the facade of three buildings. Of course the overall design of a building is important, but the choice for a particular façade construction also determines the character of a building.

Photo 1. The elongated wavy facade of the Arcoa Corporate Center - 201 Isabella Street, Pittsburgh. Designed by the Pittsburgh architectural firm The Design Alliance Architects.
A steel construction with a light grey façade made of aluminium and glass. The architecture style is Modernism. The building was completed in 1998.

Photo 2. The strikingly coloured facade of the K & L Gates Center - 200-214 Sixth Avenue, Pittsburgh.
A 155 m high skyscraper from 1968, designed by architects William Lescaze & Associates.
Here a façade in a kind of earth-colour with wide horizontal bands of steel in combination with narrow vertical tracks. The highly reflective glass integrates the building into its surroundings. Like many buildings in the USA, the name of a building changes regularly. For this building, FreeMarkets Center, One Oliver Plaza and Ariba Center. The architectural style is called International style

Photo 3 shows the facade of the 109 m high Federated Tower, Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh also known as the Liberty Center Office Tower.
A postmodern building from 1982, designed by Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann Associates
Urban Design Associates.
The façade cladding has been designed in a strong repetitive graphic pattern in a grey-concrete colour. The windows are of blue tinted glass.
