Photographer's Note

The silver from Yankee Girl Mine was hauled by mules to Durango where it was transferred to the narrow gauge railroad which connected to Denver. The Denver & Rio Grande Railway expanded to Durango and Silverton to transport the ores from the rich surrounding mountains.
In this image is one of the late model Baldwin Locomotive Works steam engine 499. In 1999 Loco 499 was cosmetically restored and now is a tourist attraction in Royal Gorge Park in Canon City.
