Photographer's Note

Nature has created a unique giant rock feature visible from Highway 9, east entrance to Zion National Park. Named Checkerboard Mesa, the rock first started out about 180 million years ago in the Jurassic Age, as lithified sand dunes. The checkerboard pattern was caused by a combination of cross bedding and joints created by frost wedging, water expanding during freezing pushing apart the rock to create vertical joints. The left to right horizontal deep scratches are due to north to south wind direction eroding the sedimentary sandstone.
