Photographer's Note

With my last photo of 2013, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! The sky turned fiery over Brooklyn a few days ago, and I would like to tell you a bit more about this great NYC borough...

Brooklyn, like the rest of NYC, was originally Dutch. It was actually made of six separate Dutch settlements back in 1634. The name comes from the Dutch word Breukelen, and the motto of Brooklyn is also from the old Dutch: "Eendraght Maeckt Maght" = "In unity there is strength"

New Year's Day 1898 was an important one for Brooklyn; that's the day it stopped being an independent city, and became part of greater NYC. Before that day, Brooklyn was the fourth largest city in the US, and it is currently the most populous borough, with 2.5 million residents.

There are 50 to 60 distinct neighborhoods in Brooklyn, each one different from the other. It's a great place to explore, and a great place to live. :-)

Just a side note, there was no change made to this photo except to add some contrast. This was the true color of the sky that evening.

Happy 2014 everyone!!!
