Photographer's Note

The Presidio at the edge of San Francisco Bay dates from a Spanish fort established in 1776 to defend the bay. The United States Army has been in control since the late 1840s. Nine acres are set aside as a cemetery, amidst the eucalyptus grove. Over 25,000 soldiers and sailors are buried here.
