Photographer's Note

One of my favorite annual events is the Old Sacramento "Gold Rush Festival", held Labor Day Weekend, and it starts this Friday, August 30th.

This capitalist requests two bits to take his photo and 4 bits to peek inside the barrel. A "bit" is based upon the Spanish 8 reales coin widely used as a dollar equivalent in the Old West, thus the 1 real coin (one bit) was equivalent to 12 and a half cents (two bits equal 25 cents or a quarter coin)

Many attendees dress the part of the old West, and it helps to get into the spirit of things to do so. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between the actors and the tourists.
