Photographer's Note

With the United Capitol Building, symbolic of secular independence standing as a beacon in the background, a crowd of approximately one thousand — Turks, Turkish Americans and Turkophiles — walked in solidarity with the young protestors occupying Gezi Park in Istanbul. Posters and banners proclaiming, “Tayyip out, Democracy in,” “Tayyip pull off your dogs,” and “Preserve the Secular Republic of Turkey,” can be seen in the hands of the marchers. Despite the wide range of ages, including children in strollers and an elderly woman in a wheelchair, the mood among the marchers was not one of festivity, but rather of discharging a somber and sobering moral obligation. Meanwhile, with many drivers honking their horns to show their support, and hundreds of bystanders snapping pictures, the message will hopefully be heard by President Obama and the Members of Congress.
