Photographer's Note

This time of year (Late August) the bull elk are at their most beautiful, since they have grown enormous antlers and haven't lost them. Nikon D300's DX format helped make long effective focal-length lenses affordable. This one was taken with a Nikkor zoom lens that has Vibration Reduction and was set to 300mm, not even at its maximum (400mm). No tripod was needed as the sun was still fairly strong a little more than an hour before sunset.

Yellowstone National Park is a great place close to home, since we live in Pocatello, Idaho, about 3 hours away by car. However, it is also full of other humans and so I wouldn't say the experience was a true wilderness experience unless you go far into the backcountry or visit during the off-season.
