Photographer's Note

Another wonderful red sandstone landscape of buttes and monoliths is Valley of the Gods, just north east of Monument Valley in southern Utah.
The Valley is on federal land protected by the Bureau of Land Management. It is accessed by a 17 mile gravel road, and there are no services, nor commercial development (Hurrah!).

"The Valley of the Gods - Nature's statues are all sculpted from Cedar Mesa sandstone dating to the Permian age, 250 million years ago. The 1,200 foot thick sandstone was cemented by calcium cabonate interspersed with layers of red siltstone and was deposited in huge sand dunes near the shores of an ancient sea. Erosion by water, wind, ice, and gravity over millions of years chiseled rock formations into the unique shapes we see today."
