Photographer's Note

Looking east from the top of Kelly Butte, Springfield's Weyerhauser paper pulp plant sends plumes of steam into Oregon's typically cloudy sky. Located about 50 miles from the Pacific coast, Springfield averages about 44 inches of rain every year. Timber and wood products are Springfield's largest economic sector, followed by retail and service. Out of view to the north is the McKenzie River, and due south of this spot atop Kelly Butte, the Willamette River heads north towards Portland through the Willamette Valley. Springfield rests on the southernmost tip of the valley and has a population of about 55,000.
