Life on Mars

At the end of the afternoon, after several hours’ driving we arrived at the Painted Hills, located near the village of Mitchell in central Oregon and one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. As the name suggests, the hills are named for their colourful layers, which were created in different geological eras. The Painted Hills are one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon.

This photo was taken just outside the actually area of the Painted Hills, but the hills showed some amazing colours already as well. The red soil of course reminds one of the red planet, Mars, and inspired me for this title, also because we visited two other ‘celestial bodies’ on Earth later on as well and of course because of the Bowie song.
