The Power of Teamwork

This unnamed waterfall is in the vicinity of Kalihiwai Falls just outside of the town of Kilauea on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

I realize the photo has some issues such as the blur of the vegetation on the left due to wind during a long exposure. But since these un-enhanced greens are representative of Kauai, I really want to share them with you.

In some ways, beautiful waterfalls are a dime a dozen in Kauai. You can't travel too far without going past one or seeing one in distance somewhere. What was interesting about this one was it's lack of access. When you're driving on Highway 56 outside of Kilauea you might see this waterfall out of the corner of your eye as you whiz by it. But since there's no parking or shoulder to stop in and it is a high speed road you can't stop. The nearest place to stop either before or after the fall is about 2 miles each way. As a result, I'd guess there aren't too many photos of this particular fall.

So this is where the teamwork part comes in. My wife was indespensible in getting this one as she dropped me off at the fall when it was safe and went on to shop at a fruit stand down the road. When she was finished she came back to pick me up. Of course I wasn't finished when she returned, the requested 15 minutes to take the photographs is never enough. But any shot is always better than no shot.

About the photo: I used a circ poplarizer and a 2 stop graduated color filter to even out the exposure. The upper part of the fall was in much brighter light than the lower part and you can see some of that bright light breaking through the trees at the top. In this case the transition area was not directly in the middle of scene which is fine when you're using the Coking system since you can slide the transition area up and down in the frame.

Regards,
Doug
