Photographer's Note

This amazing and spectacular plant, the Haleakala Silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp macrocephalum) grows only at over 2,100 metres on the extinct Haleakala volcano.
What is most amazing about the plant is that it lives in the form shown in the left hand photo for up to and over 50 years before putting out a 2 metre high flowering spike, as in the right hand photo). It then dies. No wonder it is classed as endangered!
Surprisingly it is also a member of the daisy family.

Sorry but I can't do many comments at the moment. Our district has serious fires burning nearby and 2 friends have lost their houses and art workshops. Others are under threat. It isn't going to be a good Christmas around here although we should be safe.

Best in the large view.
