Photographer's Note

In 1878 Nicholas C. Creede located in Colorado's Sawatch Mountains paydirt and the mining operations of Monarch Mine started and would operate successfully until the silver prices crashed in 1892. The residents left Monarch and left behind a ghost town. In the mid 20th century, most of the town's buildings were demolished to make room for the new highway over Monarch Pass. Today a nearby winter ski resort continues attracting visitors.
