Photographer's Note

These impressive ancient structures are found on a green table of land that rises 2,000 feet above Colorado’s open expanse. Mesa Verde was the first cultural national park in the United States. The looming Mesa is laced with large canyons and alcoves. Around 1200 AD, Ancestral Puebloan Indians began to build their homes into the cliff alcoves just below the canyon rims. It gave rise to the amazing cliff dwellings for which Mesa Verde is most famous. They range in size from one-room houses to villages of more than 150 rooms. By 1300 AD, the inhabitants were gone and Mesa Verde was deserted. Was it drought? Crop failures? Social, religious or political pressure? We don't know. But the ruins of about 600 of their cliff dwellings remain. The largest, most significant and best preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in the world.
