Photographer's Note

Taken at the Seal Rookery Beach, at San Simeon, CA, within view of Hearst Castle, about half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

These are sea lions "cooling off" on a California beach. I thought they were warming up under the sun, but the Forest Ranger, posted there permanently by the State of California to protect these sea lions, explained that they actually come up on the beach to cool off, because the breeze over the beach is really quite cool. She further explained that their body temperature, because of their fat, is high, and that is why they need to cool off.
