Photographer's Note

Why do people light candles? How does a single flame come to embody hope, reverence, or something deeper, such as faith? Unbound belief in something that cannot be named sometimes.

In this photo, these candles each represent a single petition or act of gratitude by someone -- hope or thanks for a healed body, for example. This is only a part of the massive number of candles lit at St. Dominic Church in San Francisco, which houses a shrine to St. Jude, the patron saint of desperate or hopeless causes.

This shot has been sharpened slightly, but no additional color treatment (such as sepia) was applied. I would like to thank Serdar Evman, sevman13, for inspiring this shot.

BTW, I'm back after a little bit of a break from TE. Happy to come back and see what you all have been up to.
