Photographer's Note

The first tall ship in this photo is the Patricia Belle and the second in the background is the Irving Johnson. Patricia Belle is an 82 ft. two masted black hulled schooner built in 1997. It took 3 years to build by the owner and captain, Pat Hughes. It's home port is La Isla in Marina Mazatlan, Mexico. It is a working schooner and took part in the Tall Ship Festival here in California.
The second tall ship in this photo is the SS/V Irving Johnson. It is a type of tall ship known as a brigatine. It was constructed in Dec. 2000 at a temporary boat yard next to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro, California, which is it's home port. It is a twin boat constructed at the same time as the SS/V Exy Johnson. They were built by hand using both traditional and modern wooden ship building techniques. It took three years to build and hundreds of hands, mostly volunteers. This tall ship is a part of the L. A. Maritime Institute and is used as a sailing training center for "at risk" youth in Southern California. This tall ship is named in honor of Sail Training pioneer Irving Johnson who travelled the world on board the Yankee and was featured in National Geographic Society articles(www.brigatine.com). This tall ship made it's first voyage on open ocean in Jan. 2003.Please enjoy my photo.
