Photographer's Note

Americans live fast paced lives. In fact, last year Americans passed the Japanese in the total number of hours worked each week on average. So we must love our work as well, either that, or we need to work to pay for those expensive cars, over-sized homes and vacations to the Bahamas. What that means, of course, is less time available for just about everything else, including time to sit down with family and eat a meal.

We are the world leaders, of course, in fast food restaurants like the one depicted in this photo taken in the 19th Street BART station in Oakland. I thought it quite funny that Subway restaurant had found a home in a subway, but you get the idea. Rushing to work one can grab one of their breakfast specials. Pretty exciting, right? Or, on the way to do some shopping on lunch hour you can grab a quick bite. The operative word is FAST!

I heard a news report today about President George Bush's visit today to Slovakia in which the American ambassador reveled in the fact there are over 100 McDonald's restaurants in that country. I guess it is safe to say the rest of the world is excited about the possibility of joining Americans in gulping down food with minimal nutritional value as quickly as possible... ;-)

A recent study found that obesity is the second leading cause of death in America. McDonalds seems to be getting the message because it is beginning to offer salad and fruit dishes as alternatives to fries. It still doesn't sound quite as appetizing as salad nicoise at a lovely Parisian outdoor cafe...

But this is America and we're on the move, quickly.
