Photographer's Note

A symbolic picture that marks the end of our three week journey from Chicago to Los Angeles. This picture was taken from Santa Monica Pier which is at the western end of the old Route 66. The lone person in the FG has a metal detector. The picture that I recently uploaded of the 'Bean' in Chicago is very close to the start of the long road (3,945 km or 2451 miles).

Route 66 is fondly called the 'Mother Road' or the 'Main Street of America'. Established in 1926 it was a major east-west migration route. Now largely by-passed by the Interstate highways the once thriving communities are often now just ghost towns.

We travelled as a group of eight keen photographers (organised by Photoventures). Our leader successfully followed the road where it still exists which avoided most of the freeways and allowed us to see a lot of very interesting 'small town' USA.

Now safely home I will start to post pictures of the journey through eight USA states and some of the interesting old characters that we met along the route. Apologies for very little TE critiquing but I had almost no free time on this busy but wonderful trip.
