Photographer's Note

July 14, 1771, Padre Junipero Serra at the Valley of Oaks, in central California, hung mission bells on the branches of an oak tree and named the site Mission San Antonio de Padua.
From then the mission would evolve, to another near site, and small adobe buildings. A second church was built in 1779. And todays mission was completed in
1810.
The San Antonio Mission was protected from 20th century development by the surrounding Hunter-Liggett Military Reservation.
