Photographer's Note

Arched Rock is within Sonoma Coast State Beach, protected and managed by the State of California. Located just south of Jenner and the mouth of the Russian River, off Highway 1. Swimming is prohibited due to the dangerous surf and rip tide currents.
Its name was probably from an earlier goat herd which was able to scramble over the steep bluffs and rocks.
In this view is Arched Rock the largest of the coastal arches, formed by powerful wave action selectively eroding weaker strata of the rock composition.
In addition to being a State Park, the area is a State Marine Reserve and the animals and plants are protected from human development and destruction.
