Photographer's Note

Safari West is a very unique "zoo" experience set in the hills between the towns of Calistoga and Fulton, about an hour north of San Francisco, CA. In a nutshell, some Hollywood crew folk who were working with exotic animals for movies needed to find a home for some of them, they bought a bunch of land in the middle of nowhere in wine country, and they've been slowly building a real zoo operation (giraffes, water buffalo, zebras, breeding programs, etc.) over the years. This shot was taken from the upper deck of a jeep bouncing along the dirt road (if you want to call it that) through the hills. The animals were mostly hiding that day, but I did catch what I thought was a beautiful, painterly interplay of light and shadows in this stand of trees and grass before it disappeared from view. Image as shot. Don't ever let anyone tell you the extra heft and (very minor) IQ trade-off of the Canon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens doesn't pay off when you don't have time to switch lenses!
