Photographer's Note

Let the performance begin! I feel I've held you in suspense far too long. So, rather than posting another photograph in which the lotus structures appear as crystalline on the canal's waters, this 8th Scottsdale Canal Convergence image shows the start of the "Floatus" performance. To the strains of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" flames erupt from the lotuses, spiraling upwards to disappear in the night, an impressive and inspiring performance.

I don't know whether it was a conscious acknowledgement by the artist (Walter Productions), but I found symbolism in the juxtaposition of flame and the representation of Buddhist calm. Having spent time in a majority Buddhist country, the outward calm of the people is reflected in the stillness and beauty of the lotus on the water's surface. But, some have an inner, seething, tension and anger that can erupt as fast and furious as the flame spewing from this lotus ... and be extinguished just as quickly.
