Photographer's Note

One of the most iconic views of Monument Valley, the "Man on a Horse" overlooking some of its most stunning scenery. This is the famous John Ford Point, in Monument Valley, where countless Westerns were filed over the years. It's one of the most famous views in the park. For $5, you can pay this guy to ride out on his horse for photos; I didn't, but I did get a couple of quick shots while someone else apparently did! Was kind of disappointed with the overcast sky this day, however. It did clear out somewhat later in the afternoon, after it had been threatening rain all day (but no thunderstorms forecast, unfortunately; lightning streaking through the sky with these towers in the background would have been absolutely spectacular!).

This incredible place is one of the most iconic in the world. It's located on the Arizona-Utah border, near the Four Corners area, within the territory of the Navajo Nation. The most famous aspect of this site is the plethora of sandstone buttes, the largest of which reaches about a thousand feet above the valley floor. It's a part of the Colorado Plateau formation, which is comprised of siltstone sand deposits rich in iron oxide, which explains the rich red color of the sand and stone. The buttes are stratified, comprised of three main layers. Erosion of the softer shale over a period of some 25 million years has left these buttes of vertically joined sandstone formations, comprised of rock in some cases more than 200 million years old. It is thought that these buttes were created by natural forces such as wind and water: because the cap rock is more resistant than the layers below, it remains, while the softer stone weathers away, leaving these tall towers jutting magically out of the landscape. A butte is just an eroded mesa, which can become extreme, leaving little more than spires, towers and pinnacles which become thin, almost needle-like structures.
