Photographer's Note

Portage lake is on the isthmus between Anchorage and the Kenai peninsula, Prince William Sound on one side and muddy Turnagain Arm on the other. The lake is fed by glaciers, so its very silty (decreased red colour on the water). Taken late August when the snowpack is at its minimum. It may look like a mountain lake, but is close to sea level. There is now a tunnel open for autos under the (lightened) mountains at the far right. In 1999 it was used by trains only.
