Photographer's Note

The view from the back deck at home after it had snowed most of the night. By morning, however, it was just clearing up, revealing a veritable winter wonderland. There must be places on earth where this is a common site, but near Washington, DC, where I live, it is seen infrequently.

I cropped the image to produce a length-to-width ratio of 1:1.618, otherwise known as the "golden ratio," statistically shown to appeal to the human eye. In units of pixels, that makes it 800x494. The statistical evidence of this particular shape's appeal can be found in the literature on the mathematics of aesthetics, including in a book that I wrote, 'Math and the Mona Lisa.' I would love to see others experiment with the shape, in images more beautiful than mine.
