Photographer's Note

Nine Charleston, South Carolina firefighters lost their lives last night while battling a furniture warehouse blaze and searching for people who may have been trapped inside. While searching for people that weren't there (everyone had gotten out alive) the roof suddenly collapsed on the firemen.

I knew somewhere deep in my archives I had a photo of a Charleston fire station and after hearing about the tragedy last night I searched for nearly 2 hours until I found what I was looking for, which was a photo I hadn't even thought about in years. The symbolism of the empty firetruck bay is kind of eerie this many years later and I just thought this might be the right time to experiment with a mixture of black and white/color composition.

This photo is dedicated to the nine brave heroes: Capt. William "Billy" Hutchinson, 48; Capt. Mike Benke, 49; Capt. Louis Mulkey, 34; Engineer Mark Kelsey, 40; Engineer Bradford "Brad" Baity, 37; Assistant Engineer Michael French, 27; James "Earl" Drayton, 56; Brandon Thompson, 27; and Melven Champaign, 46.

They will all be missed.
