Photographer's Note

i haven't been around in a while. i do not know how much time i will be able to invest in TE moving forward. However i may be back from time to time.

If i do return with any regularity, i will likely try to focus more on photo essays than singles. But as my initial return, i offer merely a frivolous sunrise in an effort to present some of my more recent work.

Oklahoma does not have a reputation as a state of great beauty. And honestly... i find that i must look harder to find the beauty here than in almost all other places.

Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt. Perhaps Oklahoma is not an overwhelmingly beautiful place.

But to say that it is devoid of beauty is to err.

The Wichita Mountains in southwest Oklahoma are known for having at least some aesthetic value. They were my destination a few weeks ago.

Beauty is found not merely in the destination, though, but also in the journey.

My friend Colin slept on my couch the previous night so that we could get an early start. We hoped to arrive at the Wichitas early enough to take sunrise pictures. As we gathered our gear, though, i discovered that both of my camera batteries were completely empty. We spent 45 minutes charging them as much as possible, and then left.

In far southwest Oklahoma City we merged from one highway to another. As i drove around the large, circular onramp, we were faced with a gorgeous sunrise.

i pulled over mid-onramp so we could get a few pictures.

i knew that i only had two planes with which to work--the trees, which would be silhouetted, and the brilliantly lit clouds. Colin ran to the top of the hill while i stayed below, waiting for his silhouette to add a human figure to the scene in order to compensate for the lack of depth.
