Photographer's Note

Brown pelicans find homes in a number of regions around the world, namely along the East Coast of the US on the Atlantic Ocean. Having recently been on the endangered list, brown pelicans have recently made a comeback and are doing well in this area.

This was taken last summer during a family trip to Nags Head, North Carolina. There were so many brown pelicans flying overhead and fishing it was a lovely sight to see. This was a really last minute shot - I saw them coming, grabbed my camera, pointed up to the sky and took the picture. I'm really pleased with how they are aligned, not perfectly symmetrical, but not really overlapping either.

A friend of mine always wants to move the third one from the top down up a bit so they are evenly spaced, but I'm happy with it as is.

The most amazing part of seeing these birds was not in flight overhead but as they fished. You'll see them flying around in a circles above the water, and all of a sudden they just nosedive into the water with a little splash. You can almost hear the wind passing through their wings. Needless to say, it's a great way to spend some time sitting on the beach!

Check out some of these videos of brown pelicans to get an idea of what they look like in motion:
